One time too many
From News of the Weird, week of 11/16:
"And the next day in South Philadelphia, a 25-year-old man who had apparently been indecently exposing himself to girls and women in the neighborhood for several weeks, tried it one time too many and was chased by "20 to 30" girls from St. Maria Goretti High School, caught, roughed up, and held for police. [Philadelphia Inquirer, 10-31- 03]"
Ironically, or not so ironically perhaps, St. Maria Goretti is one of the Virgin Martyrs.

Worms for supper!
The BBC has set up a blogging website for the island residents of North Argyll, Scotland. One of the island bloggers, Gammarus, King of the Sea describes his Christmas feast:
"I have to say she did cook up a feast though. There were some lovely herring pieces she'd got from somewhere, crabs, mussels, clams, snails, urchins, worms, with amphipod nibbles and some isopod selection boxes for the young uns."
Yeah, he said worms.

Stuff
For some reason, MT-Blacklist had recently begun blocking all URLs posted in comments, including mine. So I did a reinstall.
The good news is now everything seems to be working as it should.
The bad news is now my blog is getting pinged within an inch of it's life by some poker site (well, actually several.)
But the good news is I don't see any of those trackbacks appearing anywhere on the site, so maybe Blacklist is doing it's job.
Except I'm getting a ton of e-mail as MT is setup to send an email informing me of each and every ping.
UPDATE: I did have to go through Blacklist and delete each ping even though I didn't see anything on the blog. I think we're all squared away now.

Saturday Links
I mentioned the other day that I'd scooped up the first 5 Harry Potter books at the grocery store. I've only read the first few chapters of "The Sorceror's Stone," but I've found a couple of good analyses of the series: 1) Mark D. Roberts encourages us to use discernment when reading Harry Potter. 2) Jonathan at "Toward an Evangelical Mind" also has a wonderfully reasoned analysis of the Harry Potter books.
I'm not the only one buying Harry Potter at the grocery store. Kevin at Collected Miscellany thinks selling books at the supermarket is a bad idea for book publishing.

"Starting books is the new speedreading." No kidding. The Gospel of Life looks like a book I need to put on my to-read list.

I sponsored two bloggers this year:

and
Eric Siegmund of the Fire Ant Gazette who's blogging for Midland Fair Havens, a Midland, Texas ministry that serves single moms and their kids.
Eric's got a music contest going and Julie's writing an episodic story about Bob the Doormat complete with photos. Madness and mayhem are bound to ensue!

SNAKE!
I saw this big, giant snake on the driveway as I was leaving tonight to run a errand.
Ok, it wasn't "big" or "giant." It was only as big around as my finger, but still. I watched it for awhile and took pictures of it. (They're not great pictures because I didn't get very close to it for obvious reasons.) I wasn't worried about this little one so much as the big mama snake that was probably lurking around somewhere. I thought I might have run over it as I backed the car out of the garage, but it must have run away because I didn't see any sign of it. Unless! Unless it jumped up on the undercarriage of the car and is now lurking somewhere inside!

Last Sunday as I was raising up the garage door to go to church, one of those pink and gray lizards fell off the garage door and landed, plop!, on the garage floor not a foot away from me and scurried under the car. If it had landed on me, I probably wouldn't be here today writing this.

And don't put beans up your nose
Part of California's disaster preparations is a warning to people not to surf tsunami waves: "NEVER GO TO THE BEACH TO WATCH FOR, OR SURF, A TSUNAMI WAVE."
The LA Times article reports:
Malibu emergency preparedness Director Brad Davis said some of the tips may seem painfully obvious, but it's always better to be safe than sorry."You can't overestimate the intelligence of people out there [emphasis added]," Davis said. "Some people still might see it as a gigantic wave and think, 'This is going to be the ride of my life.' "
Apparently, some people tried it in Hawaii about 10 years ago:
Last year the state distributed a DVD to 100 surf shops in Hawaii explaining the dangers of trying to ride a tsunami. Besides the risk of death, there are other reasons not to surf a tsunami. For one, according to a surfing website, "a tsunami does not curl."
It doesn't "curl."
Besides the fact that it will kill you, it doesn't curl.
Some people are going to try it, just because they were warned against it. Let's just hope they never get the chance.

Whatever happened to Ken Jennings?
You know...Ken Jennings...that guy that won a pile of money on Jeopardy!. He's got a blog (a rather well-written blog) and he wrote a post dogging the source of his fame and fortune. His blog post was picked up by the NYPost. That story was picked up by the AP and then CNN.com where I found it. Ken's post wasn't so much a put down of Jeopardy! as a call for modernization. "What I really wanted to talk to you about," he writes, "was your image." In other words, Jeopardy! you're stuffy and square. Ken has a point, but that stuffy, high-brow approach is part of the game show's charm. On the other hand, a category or two about Famous NASCAR Drivers, probably wouldn't kill it. And, yeah, ditch the Clue Crew.
Anyway, that non-story led me to Ken's website. Since his win, he's been involved in all kinds of "trivial pursuits" including writing a book about the world of trivia and trivia contests.
On a completely unrelated note, the CNN.com article linked directly to Ken's blog post. This was the first time I've seen this. Usually MSM articles reference a blog post or website with a crippled web addy that you have to cut and paste into your browser. Is this a sign that blogging is becoming more and more accepted by the main stream?

The bad news is Mel Gibson was arrested for drunk driving Friday, July 28. The badder news is that while being arrested he apparently let fly a string of anti-Semitic epithets.
Oddly, Hollywood execs & movie-goers would probably have been more forgiving of the actual crime he committed than the egregious way he chose to ignore the Miranda warning.
