Blog update
I wasn't planning on updating my blog, but one thing led to another and before I knew it I had a slightly revamped blog. I had a lot of notes: things I wanted to blog about, but hadn't gotten around to blogging. I ended up just chucking most of that and decided to start fresh.
I was disappointed to see how I'd watched more movies last year than I'd read books. It doesn't look like I'm doing much to rectify that situation this year though does it?

Sunday links
Geek alert: Babylon 5 scripts now available! All 92 scripts in 15 volumes! The first volume is now available for 40 bucks from Cafe Press! w00t!
I was looking for a zip code today and came across this helpful site, AreaConnect. If offers a lot of useful information for your town or any town you plan to visit.

Wil Wheaton accidently killed WWdN, so now he's blogging at WWdN: In Exile. I consider myself an avid WWdN reader, but he's been in exile for 3 months and I'm just now learning this.

Deuce Four movie
Michelle Malkin writes that Bruce Willis wants to do a movie about the Iraq War based on the reporting of embedded journalist Michael Yon. This is an excellent idea! Yon is a great writer. This could be the first movie inspired by a blog! (via Captain's Quarters)

Flying Carpets
We had our carpets cleaned last week. (Not the same as having your clocks cleaned, believe me.) So between moving all the cr@p out of the rooms to be cleaned, waiting for the carpets to dry and then deciding to rearrange my workspace, I haven't done any blogging. Or even much blog-reading. But I think I'm back on track as of today. Try to contain yourselves.
My geek cred took a small hit this weekend as I did not go see "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" on opening day. I'm going to wait a few weekends. And speaking of Narnia, LaShawn Barber has a interesting new blog at Fantasy Fiction for Christians.

fastr
Ok, so much for my resolution to blog more.
Here's a new time-waster: fastr. Try to guess the keyword common to the group of flickr photos that appear. It's highly addictive!

Reasons why blogging's been light around here
And don't laugh.
1.) I've been spending way too much time editing my del.icio.us links. I uploaded all my bookmarks and then planned to take a few minutes to tag stuff and, wahla, I'd have fresh, new del.icio.us links! But, no! A few minutes turned into hours of tweaking this and that and the other thing. Bah! Enough!
2.) I've been trying to read Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. It's taken me about 2 months to get through half of it. It should be renamed Slow Crash. I'd listened to about half the audio book a few years ago, but gave it up thinking it would be a faster if I just read it. I was wrong.
The not-to-distant future Stephenson has created is fascinating. Hyper-capitalism is the law of the land. Corporations have grown more powerful than the government. In fact, the government is a corporation. The Metaverse he describes isn't too far from the internet we have now (see Second Life). But the characters are sketchy and flat. They don't even have actual names. The main character, a katana-wielding, free-lance hacker, is called "Hiro Protagonist" and his teenage, skate-boarding side-kick is "Y.T." which stands for "Yours Truly." (Although, I think her real name is later revealed.)
Snow Crash was published in 1992, so I'm coming to it a little late. Other people have said good things about Stephenson's more recent work and I'm looking forward to reading that.
I'm hoping there's a big payoff at the end of Snow Crash. I'll let you know when/if that happens.
And finally: Look at this geeky cat.

Movable Type 3.2
I finally upgraded to Movable Type 3.2. It has a much improved blogging UI and really takes a bite out of that spam! Yay! I should've done this sooner. It's got a lot of great features, but oddly, it doesn't create new posts. Apparently, I still have to do that myself. Imagine that!

Lileks buys a car
James Lileks bought a new car last week and I'm a little concerned.
Now, of course, I barely know the man, but he runs one of the most well-designed, pleasing-to-the-eye websites, ever, and I read The Bleat nearly everyday. But still, why should I care about what car he buys. Because he bought one of the ugliest cars ever made, the Honda Element. It's so ugly, it makes me cry every time I see one on the road. Lileks writes that someone compared it to a Soviet Ice Cream Truck. No. The Soviets had more style. Actually, I think it was a car built for Asimo and then Honda decided to try to sell it to actual people.
But then he mentions that the car has XM radio. Well, okay. Having experienced the joys of XM radio myself, I'll cut him a little slack. Satellite radio is God's gift to the bored commuter. It's got everything from old music to new music to news to radio drama, nearly any audio you could ever want without the inane commercials or the constant repetition.
Faced with a choice between a Honda Element (which I keep wanting to call a Fifth Element) with XM radio or a Jaguar with boring terrestrial radio...oh, heck yeah, I'd get the Jaguar. I mean, please...

I've been trying to take photos of churches around town, but so far none of my pics are as wonderful as this one. Beautiful!

The new Townhall.com
Townhall.com has joined forces with Salem Radio Network to create a editorial, blogging, podcasting whopper of a website devoted to Conservative opinion. Sweet! I don't visit Townhall.com that much, so it's total news to me. The merger was led apparently by Hugh Hewitt who's serving as executive editor. Now I'll be able to listen to the talk shows I like in podcast form, except I can't get that feature to work properly. They still have a few bugs to work out, but overall it's a good thing.

D'oh!
This morning, intending to view the unpublished entries on my blog, I inadvertantly unpublished all the entries in my blog. Two totally different things, there. All my blog entries disappeared from the website.
Fortunately, I was able to re-publish all of them, so everything is back to normal.
But, really...d'oh!

A few things
- PBS broadcast a couple of episodes of the behind-the-scenes documentary about Windsor Castle: A Royal Year. It's a castle, palace, art gallery and working farm all in one. Fun fact (for scale purposes): Windsor Great Park occupies 15,000 acres. The King Ranch covers 825,000 acres.
- Today is the 37th anniversary of the first moon landing.
- It's pointless for me to mention this since it's been slashdotted, but Mike J. Nelson, former host of MST3K, is doing his own DVD commentary tracks via a new project called RiffTrax. The tracks are $1.99. Payment through PayPal. I've already purchased mine. The payment and download is relatively quick and seamless. The first movie is Roadhouse which is one of my favorite bad movies.
A couple of weeks ago I was all excited about the new Townhall.com site. Now I have to rein in my good thoughts about it, because, apparently, there are no RSS feeds anywhere on the site. The lack of that particular technology seriously cripples Townhall.com. Hopefully they'll correct that in the near future.- Um, never mind... Townhall.com RSS feeds on the way!

Blogathon 2006
Blogathon 2006 for charity took place yesterday, raising a whopping $99,840.49. Not too shabby! Check out these great Blogathon 2006 blogs:
- The Bakerina who blogged for Heifer International and posted a lot of great recipes,
- Eric at The Fire Ant Gazette who blogged for Midland Fair Havens and held a lot of music trivia contests. (All of which I lost.)
- Julie at Lone Prairie Blog who blogged for Abused Adult Resource Center and wrote another great Bob story,
- and Jimmy at Sticky Doorknobs who also blogged for Midland Fair Havens and wrote a sweet story, "The Lost Yankee". (Can I call it "sweet"? By that, I mean, of course, it was cool.)
Eric and Jimmy held a team blogging event at the local HEB for the first few hours of the Blogathon, a really cool idea to get the word out about their charity. I have to wonder, though, how many shoppers even knew what the heck a Blogathon was?
BTW, if you're interested in any of those charities, you can still pledge over at the Blogathon 2006 site.

Connectivity issues
Wednesday, I had a brief power outage and since then my internet connection's been sluggish. I think it's the router again. Now I have to go through the ritual: unplug the cable modem, then the wireless router, wait 3 minutes. Then, stand on my head, spin like a top, sacrifice a chicken, etc.
So I've decided to put my router on notice!

Geeky goodness
Last Saturday, tired of entering Technorati tags by hand, I decided to look for some sort of short cut to make it quicker and easier to tag my posts. Of course, I came across Technorati Tools and found tagging resources there. I ended up cobbling together a javascript bookmarklet from one I found on Andrew Beacock's site and this one I found on FreeHogg. (They're virtually the same with some minor variations.) Then I used the CSS from Finian Darragh's Tag Generator. Since I also like to add Tagjag (or Gada.be) tags to my posts, too, it was easy to make the few modifications to the script to accomodate those tags as well. Then, I copped the Technorati .gif from FeedHogg and made my own Tagjag icon from the site's icon, added those into the javascript and waalaa! new javascript bookmarklets for my tags. It's not a perfect solution, but it beats coding the tags by hand.
On a side note, I know nothing about javascript, but it turned out that it wasn't so difficult to work with after all.

Blogging to continue...no, really...honest!...I SWEAR!
Job-related stress issues and a fussy internet connection have kept me away from blogging for a few days, but I plan to continue. Have no fear.
What do you mean, was I gone?
